The Republic of Liberia, founded in 1821 and declared independent in 1847, is a republic located in western Africa along the North Atlantic Ocean, which borders the nation to the west. Its neighboring countries include Cote d’Ivoire, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. Liberia controls 111,369 square kilometers and claims 200 nautical miles of territorial sea, its geographic size making it the 104th largest independent state. With a population slightly over 4 million people, it is the 128th most populous nation in the world.
