Lithuania is a unitary parliamentary republic in northern Europe. It has an estimated population of around 3 million and has an area of 65,300 sq km. A Baltic state, it is bordered by Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east and south, Poland to the south, and Kaliningrad Oblast to the southwest. On 11 March 1990, Lithuania was the first state to declare independence from the USSR.
