FAQ

 FAQs

I) What is RHSMUN?

RHSMUN stands for Regional High School Model United Nations. RHSMUN is a yearly conference held in early December.  The conference was held in Salt Lake City for 14 years, and was held in San Francisco for the first time in December 2011.  It is a 3 day/2 night conference.  RHSMUN is run by an all-volunteer staff of college students from all over the country. RHSMUN is the partner conference to the National High School Model United Nations (NHSMUN) Conference, held every year in New York City during the month of March.

II) What is Model United Nations?

Model United Nations is an academic program designed to teach students about contemporary events in international politics. Students participating in MUN simulate committees in the United Nations by playing the role of delegates from countries all over the world. Students are provided with topics, developed by the RHSMUN staff, prior to the conference and debate and discuss them with other students in an attempt to write resolutions. The process is designed to exercise students ability to speak, write, research and think critically about the most pressing issues of the day.

III) Do you have any information that can help me start a Model United Nations program at my school?

IMUNA has developed a “Classroom to Conference” program that is available online here. The information you will find here was designed to help teachers prepare their students to participate in a Model United Nations conference. It contains guidelines for how to teach students the rules of debate and how to do their research and preparation prior to the conference. RHSMUN also provides a visiting director program that sends staff members to classrooms. More details about this year’s program coming soon!

IV) How do I bring my students to RHSMUN?

RHSMUN provides an easy-to-use online registration form. Once you know how many students you will be bringing to the conference, simply fill the form out accordingly. It will automatically calculate the amount you owe and provide you with the address of where the check can be mailed.

V) How much does it cost to come to RHSMUN?

RHSMUN charges a $75 school fee.  In addition, there is a $75/participant fee that is charged. This is simply a per student fee that is charged for each participant at RHSMUN. This charge also applies to faculty advisors as well. For some of our more specialized committees, there is an additional $35/participant fee (ICJ, SC, UNMISS).

VI) What does the money I pay to RHSMUN being used for?

RHSMUN and our parent organization, IMUNA, are not-for-profit organizations. Our costs are meant only to offset the costs of the conference so that RHSMUN can continue to be a successful, high quality conference. The money earned from fees goes toward securing conference rooms large enough to accommodate the conference, bring staff members into the area for the conference and pay for the supplies and equipments it takes to manage the conference.

VII) Where can my students stay if we are coming to the conference from out of town?

RHSMUN is held in the conference space of the Parc 55 Wyndham Hotel in the Union Square area of San Francisco.  The Parc 55 also provides any participants of RHSMUN with discounted room rates. A list of these rooms and how to book them can be found on the hotel accommodations page in our logistics section.

VIII) Why has the conference moved to San Francisco from Salt Lake City?

When RHSMUN was established 15 years ago, it was meant to be a high-quality conference for students in the Western United States. Salt Lake City, with its central location, was deemed an appropriate location, but has not proven to attract students from outside of Utah and Colorado.  The move to San Francisco was the result of an executive decision by the IMUNA Board to increase attendance and provide extensive opportunities for delegates in a vibrant, urban, and culturally-rich location.  The decision to move the conference will broaden our impact on the global Model UN community, and will provide delegates access to NGOs, consulates and other organizations that share our mission.

IX) How easy is it to get to San Francisco?

The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is approximately 20 minutes away from the Parc 55 Hotel. Flights to SFO can easily be found and most discount airlines provided low-cost flights into the city.
