It is bordered by Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and France (via French Guiana). Brazil declared independence from Portugal in 1822, and is currently governed as a Federal Republic. Brazil has the seventh largest economy in the world by GDP, according to the IMF.
