Armenia, officially known as The Republic of Armenia, is located in Eastern Europe. It is bordered by Turkey (west), Georgia (north), the de facto independent Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and Azerbaijan (east), and Iran (south). It is a democratic nation state with an ancient cultural heritage. It is not very large, with 11,484 square miles. Armenia declared independence from the Soviet Union August 23, 1990.
