Eritrea (/ˌɛrɨˈtreɪ.ə/ or /ˌɛrɨˈtriːə/; ኤርትራ ʾErtrā ; إرتريا Iritriyā), officially the State of Eritrea, is a country located in the Horn of Africa. With a population of about 6 million, it has an area of 117,600 km2. Eritrea is a single-party state led by the People’s Front for Democracy and Justice.
With its capital at Asmara, it is bordered by Sudan to the west, Ethiopia in the south, and Djibouti in the southeast. The northeastern and eastern parts of Eritrea have a strategic location with a coastline along the Red Sea, across from Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
Eritrea declared its independence from Ethiopia in 1993.
