Its other closest neighbors are Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and the Turks and Caicos. Haiti is home to just under 10 million people, 1/5 of which live in the country’s capital, Port-Au-Prince. Haiti is a republic, with a president, bicameral legislature, and a court system. The size of this country is 27750 sq km, or 17243 sq miles. Haiti gained its independence from France on January 1, 1804.
