Iran (/ɪˈrɑːn or /aɪˈræn/, Persian: ایران [ʔiːˈɾɑn]), also known under its older name Persia, official name “The Islamic Republic of Iran” is a country in the Middle East, bordered by Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey and Irak; over the Caspian Sea it is bordered with Russia and Kazakhstan. It has direct access to the Indian Ocean via the Persian Gulf in the south of the Country.
It has an area of 1,648,195 sq km, making it the 18th largest country in the world, and a population of 80,840,713 (July 2014 est.), making it the 19th most populated country on earth.
