In 1936, it became a Soviet Republic; lasting 54 years until its full independence.
Concerning politics, Kyrgyzstan is a republic: the president serves for a six-year long term, elected by the Kyrgyz people based on a universal suffrage. The prime minister is normally appointed by the Parliament in the measure in which he or she holds more than half of the seats.
