Lebanon, officially known as the Lebanese Republic, is located in Western Asia with a population of 5,882,562 and 1.125 million registered Syrian refugees. Lebanon shared borders with Syria to the North and Israel to the south. Lebanon gained independence in 1943 when Germany occupied France. With a parliamentary democracy, Lebanon represents 18 official religious group with specific government positions relegated for specific religious denominations. The President must be a Maronite Christian and Prime Minister, a Sunni Muslim.
