Slovenia began as The Slovene Lands as part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After World War I, Slovenia joined with Croatia and Serbia to form Yugoslavia. After World War II, Yugoslavia was taken under communist rule and ethnic tension between the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. In 1991 Slovenia established independence and now operates under a parliamentary republic as the Republic of Slovenia. It neighbors the Julian Alps between Austria and Croatia.
